Abstract

The rapid adoption of cloud services, remote work, distributed applications, and digital customer platforms has transformed enterprise identity management into a critical component of modern security architecture. Organizations increasingly need to manage distinct identity populations, including internal workforce users and external customers, while maintaining consistent security, scalability, governance, and user experience. This paper presents a hybrid identity architecture that integrates on-premises Active Directory with Microsoft Entra ID for workforce identity management and Azure AD B2C for customer identity and access management. The proposed approach establishes a unified identity strategy while maintaining appropriate separation between workforce and customer identity domains. The architecture incorporates identity synchronization, authentication, authorization, single sign-on, multifactor authentication, conditional access, identity lifecycle management, and policy-based access controls to support secure access across enterprise applications and digital services. For workforce users, integration between Active Directory and Entra ID enables centralized identity management and controlled access to cloud and on-premises resources. For external users, Azure AD B2C provides a scalable CIAM capability supporting customer registration, authentication, profile management, and application access. The framework demonstrates how hybrid identity architectures can improve security, operational efficiency, scalability, and identity governance across heterogeneous environments. The proposed strategy provides a practical foundation for enterprises seeking to modernize identity services while supporting both workforce productivity and secure customer engagement.
